If Love Were a Season
by Nicole Terry
love rains past these cold nights
nature leaves this century eternal
summer ebb, winter tide
slice the next solstice wide
dirty season yet to flow
off the long cycle of death
the frozen crescent of life
falls short of the moon
the new year rises slowly
through dark ice—
will the sun blossom dry
to end a wet sky?
barren star begin on time
always after an equinox
and one month of earthbound snow
minute turns to day
and clouds the breeze of warmth
in love.
